Refresh Facial Contours

Facial ageing is a part of life, however it can be influenced by several factors such as genetics, sun exposure, lifestyle habits, and weight loss. Over the years, skin may begin to lose elasticity, muscle tone can weaken, and fat may shift or diminish, bone diminishes, contributing to excess skin, deep creases, and a less defined jawline.

While non-surgical treatments can offer subtle changes, individuals seeking more significant and longer-lasting results may consider Facelift surgery.

What Is Facelift Surgery?

A Facelift medically known as a Rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that aims to alter facial contours and address visible signs of ageing in the mid-to-lower face and neck. It focuses on changing the rectangular shape of an ageing face to a more youthful triangular shape by tightening excess skin, reducing the appearance of deep facial folds and repositioning underlying tissues leading to a more refreshed, firmer appearance. In some cases, excess skin is also removed to reduce laxity and contour the jawline.

Why do people consider Facelift Surgery?

While a Facelift does not stop the ageing process or fundamentally change a person’s facial structure, it may help increase the definition of certain features by reducing the appearance of excess skin and soften deep creases. Many individuals consider Facelift surgery for personal or aesthetic reasons, which can include:

  • Reduced skin elasticity resulting in loose skin around the lower face and neck
  • Deep facial lines and wrinkles, particularly around the mouth and nose (nasolabial folds)
  • Volume loss in the mid-face and cheeks
  • Softened jawline definition or jowling
  • Localised fat deposits or loose skin under the chin (often referred to as a “double chin”)
  • Significant weight loss resulting in excess facial skin

Each Facelift procedure performed by Dr Gary Kode is tailored to the patient’s unique facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. In some cases a Facelift may be performed alongside other procedures such as a Next Lift, Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) or a Brow Lift for a more comprehensive result.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Facelift Surgery?

Facelift surgery may be an option for individuals who are concerned about visible signs of facial ageing and are considering surgical options to address skin laxity in the lower face and neck. While each patient is assessed on a case-by-case basis, suitable candidates often share some common characteristics.

You may be considered a suitable candidate for Facelift surgery if you:

  • Have noticeable signs of ageing, such as excess skin, jowls, or deep facial folds.
  • Are in generally good physical health, without any conditions that could impair healing.
  • Are a non-smoker or are willing to stop smoking for a recommended period before and after surgery.
  • Have realistic expectations about the potential outcomes of the procedure.
  • Possess adequate skin elasticity and muscle tone to support surgical tightening.
  • Fully understand the risks and possible complications associated with Facelift surgery.

Dr Gary Kode will conduct a thorough consultation to determine your suitability for Facelift surgery and guide you through your available options.

Types and Variations of Facelift Surgery

There are several types of Facelift procedures available, each suited to different concerns, anatomy, and stages of ageing. The terms are confusing in the literature, and each surgeon uses their own descriptions of exactly what they do. Below is a guide to different types of Facelift surgery commonly performed by Dr. Kode:

Full Facelift (Standard Facelift)

A Full Facelift targets moderate to advanced facial ageing and typically addresses skin laxity in the face and neck, and the deeper layer known as the Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System (SMAS). Incisions are made from the temple scalp around the ears and probably along the hairline over the bone behind the ear. Incisions under the chin are seldom used nowadays. This procedure allows for the most comprehensive repositioning of underlying tissues and removal of excess skin.

Who it may suit: Individuals with significant skin laxity and deeper lines or folds across the lower two-thirds of the face and neck. It is ideal for patients around the age of 50 who want a long lasting result.

Mini Facelift

A Mini Facelift is a less extensive version of the Standard SMAS Facelift. It uses slightly shorter incisions, and is often recommended for those with early signs of ageing, or older patients with extensive skin laxity who do not want a drastic change in appearance.. Much less work is done on the SMAS layer

Who it may suit: Individuals in their 40s to 50s seeking subtle changes without the downtime of a Full Facelift or much older patients who don’t require a long lasting result, plus a shorter recovery time

Mid-Facelift

This technique focuses specifically on the cheeks and under-eye area. It is designed to lift and reposition the fat pads in the mid-face, increase cheek definition and reduce nasolabial folds. Fat injection has also been used to address similar problems.

Who it may suit: Patients with volume loss or laxity in the central face but who don’t require treatment of the jawline or neck.

Lower Facelift

A Lower Facelift targets the jawline, chin, and neck area. It is suitable for altering the appearance of jowls and excess neck skin and can often be performed alongside a Neck Lift for a more comprehensive result.

Who it may suit: People with ageing changes limited to the lower face and neck.

Deep Plane Facelift

The Deep Plane Facelift is not performed by Dr Kode

Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)

Although not strictly a Facelift, Neck Lift surgery is often performed in conjunction with Facelift procedures. It involves tightening the neck muscles and removing excess skin and fat for a smoother, firmer neck profile.

Who it may suit: Individuals with loose neck skin and visible muscle bands.

Choosing the Right Facelift Technique

The most suitable Facelift approach varies from person to person. Your anatomy, skin quality, age, and specific goals will all play a role in determining which method is most suitable. A consultation with a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon, like Dr Gary Kode is essential to make sure the technique aligns with your needs and expectations.

Facelift – What’s involved in the Procedure?

Facelift surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia, though local anaesthesia with sedation may be an option for some patients depending on the extent of the procedure.

Incisions are carefully planned and positioned to reduce visibility. The location of the incisions will vary depending on the type and extent of Facelift being performed. Incisions may be placed from the temples, around the ears (in front of and behind) and extend along the hairline behind the ears.

Once the incisions are made Dr Kode will lift the skin and reposition the underlying tissue and muscle (SMAS layer) to alter facial contours. Fat may be redistributed or removed. The skin will then be re-draped over the newly shaped contours and any excess skin will be removed.

Dr Kode will then close the incisions with fine sutures placed under the skin, so that suture removal is not required. The scalp is closed with staples to minimise hair loss. They are removed at 2 weeks. Generally, drains are placed to prevent fluid accumulation. They are removed the next day.

Recovery after Facelift Surgery

Recovery following Facelift surgery varies from person to person, but most patients can expect a steady and manageable healing process. Some swelling, bruising, discomfort, and tightness are to be expected during the early stages of recovery. These effects are typically most noticeable in the first few days and should gradually subside over time as healing progresses.

Immediate Postoperative Period

During the first week after your Facelift, you may experience facial swelling, tenderness, and mild to moderate discomfort. These symptoms are usually managed with prescribed medication or over-the-counter pain relief, as directed by Dr Kode. Applying cold compresses during the first 48 hours may also help reduce swelling and increase comfort.

Compression garments and supportive dressings are not used. The dressing covering the incisions is removed on the 4th morning after surgery, and the patient washes their hair..

Wound Care and Activity Restrictions

Dr Kode and his team will provide you with personalised post-operative care instructions. These will include how to care for your incisions, how to monitor for signs of infection, how to  manage hygiene, and when to resume daily activities.

It’s important to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least 3 weeks after surgery. Most patients are advised to rest and limit physical activity during the first few weeks, gradually returning to light daily tasks as they feel able. Depending on your job, you may be able to return to work within 2 weeks, provided your duties are not physically demanding.

Long-Term Healing and Results

Swelling and residual bruising may take several weeks or months to fully resolve. While some early changes will be noticeable as swelling subsides, your final results will become more apparent as healing progresses.

Scars will continue to mature and fade over the following 12 months or more. Wearing your support garment, following post-operative care instructions, and attending follow-up appointments will help optimise your surgical outcome.

Dr Kode is committed to making sure each patient receives high-quality care throughout their recovery. You’ll have access to ongoing guidance, and the team will be available to answer any questions you may have along the way.

Risks and Complications

As with all surgical procedures, Facelift surgery carries potential risks and complications. These can include, but are not limited to:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding or haematoma
  • Poor Scarring
  • Nerve damage
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Hair loss around incision sites
  • Asymmetry
  • Anaesthetic risks

Dr Kode will discuss potential risks and complications during your consultation as part of the informed consent process. Visit our Risks and Complications page for more information.

How Much Does Facelift Surgery Cost in Melbourne?

Facelift costs vary based on the complexity and duration of surgery, hospital fees (how long you stay in hospital for), anaesthetist fees, and whether it is performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction to other surgeries e.g Liposuction.

After your consultation with Dr Kode, a detailed quote will be provided for your specific procedure.

Medicare Eligibility for Facelift Surgery

In most cases, a Facelift is not eligible for Medicare coverage, as it is often considered a cosmetic procedure not a medically necessary one.

There are some rare cases where Medicare may offer partial coverage if the Facelift is performed for reconstructive or medically necessary reasons. This can include cases, such as: facial trauma or injury, congenital deformities, tumour removal or facial paralysis.

Even in these cases only a portion of the surgical fees may be covered and hospital and anaesthesia costs may still apply.
