What Is Abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen. It may also involve tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles, for some individuals. It is typically considered by those that want to alter the appearance of their stomach following significant weight loss, pregnancy, or ageing.
Why Do People Consider Abdominoplasty?
Individuals choose to undergo Abdominoplasty for various reasons;
- Reduce loose abdominal skin/skin folds
- Address Muscle separation (diastasis recti) after pregnancy
- Reduce excess fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise
- Reduce skin irritation or hygiene issues caused by skin folds
- Address functional concerns such as poor posture or core support
Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Abdominoplasty?
Suitable candidates for Abdominoplasty surgery typically meet the following criteria:
- Are in good overall health with no contraindications for surgery
- Are at or near a stable weight
- Do not smoke or are willing and able to quit in advance of surgery
- Have realistic expectations about the procedure
- Are bothered by the appearance of their abdomen despite diet and exercise
- Do not plan significant future weight loss, weight gain or pregnancy
Types of Abdominoplasty Surgery
There are different types of Abdominoplasty, and Dr Kode will recommend the most appropriate option based on your needs:
Partial Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck
Involves tightening and removing skin and fat from the lower abdomen only. It’s suitable for patients with mild to moderate concerns below the navel and does not require repositioning of the belly button.
Full Abdominoplasty
A Full Abdominoplasty involves removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen, typically from the area between the pubic region and the navel. It also allows for the tightening of abdominal muscles and repositioning of the navel. This option is often suited to individuals with more significant skin laxity or muscle separation.
Liposuction-Assisted Abdominoplasty
In some cases, liposuction may be performed in conjunction with Abdominoplasty to assist in shaping the surrounding areas, such as the flanks or upper abdomen. This approach may be suitable for individuals with good skin tone who want fat removal in addition to tissue tightening. Your suitability for this technique will be assessed during consultation.

Abdominoplasty – What’s Involved in the Procedure?
Dr Kode performs all Abdominoplasty surgeries in accredited hospitals while patients are under general anaesthesia. The procedure typically takes between 2–4 hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.
Generally, Dr Kode will make an incision along the lower abdomen (possibly around the navel), he will then remove the excess skin and fat and tighten underlying muscles and move the position of the navel (if necessary). Once Dr Kode is satisfied he will close the incisions with sutures/stitches (internally and externally) and apply a dressing.
This procedure is tailored to the individual’s goals and anatomy. It’s important to consult with a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon like Dr Gary Kode to determine if Abdominoplasty is the right approach for your aesthetic concerns.
Recovery After Abdominoplasty
Recovery following Abdominoplasty surgery will vary from patient to patient, but most individuals can expect a manageable and progressive healing process. A degree of pain, discomfort, swelling and bruising is to be expected during the initial stages of recovery. These symptoms are usually most pronounced in the first few days after surgery but should gradually lessen as the body heals.
Immediate Postoperative Period
In the first week following surgery, you can expect to experience some pain, sensitivity, and swelling around the incision sites. You may also find it difficult to stand upright and may need to walk slightly hunched over for several days. Discomfort is typically managed with prescription medications and over-the-counter pain relief, as recommended by Dr Kode. Applying ice packs during the first 48 hours can also help reduce swelling and increase comfort.
Throughout your recovery, you will be required to wear a support or compression garment. This garment helps to provide stability, reduce swelling, protect the surgical incisions, and support optimal healing of the abdominal area.
Wound Care and Activity Modifications
Dr Kode and his team will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions tailored to your individual surgical plan. These guidelines will cover how to care for your incision sites, signs of complications to watch for, how to shower safely, and when to resume activities.
It’s important to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for a least a few weeks after surgery. Most patients are advised to rest and limit physical activity during the first few weeks, gradually returning to light daily tasks as they feel able. Depending on your job, you may be able to return to work within 2 weeks, provided your duties are not physically demanding.
Long-Term Healing and Results
Swelling can take several weeks or even months to fully dissipate and your final results may not be visible until this has subsided. Scars will continue to mature and fade over the following 6–12 months. Wearing your support garment, following post-operative care instructions, and attending follow-up appointments will help optimise your surgical outcome.
Dr Kode is committed to making sure each patient receives high-quality care throughout their recovery. You’ll have access to ongoing guidance, and the team will be available to answer any questions you may have along the way.

- Bleeding or haematoma
- Scarring
- Fluid accumulation (seroma)
- Delayed wound healing
- Asymmetry
- Anaesthetic risks
