Monsplasty (also known as pubic mound reduction or pubic lift surgery), is a surgical procedure performed to reduce and reshape the mons pubis (the fatty tissue located above the pubic bone). Some people seek this procedure because the area may appear enlarged due to weight fluctuations, genetics, ageing, or changes following childbirth. While it is a relatively lesser-known procedure, Monsplasty can help address both functional and aesthetic concerns for individuals who have concerns about this area.
Dr Gary Kode offers this procedure for patients who are concerned about excess tissue or fullness in this area. Monsplasty may be performed as a standalone procedure although Dr Kode often performs the procedure in conjunction with Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery for a more comprehensive result, depending on the individual assessment, desires and surgical plan.
What Is Monsplasty Surgery?
Monsplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the mons pubis by removing excess fat, skin, or tissue. The approach depends on the patient’s anatomy and may involve Liposuction, surgical removal of tissue, or both. The goal is to alter the mons area, so it is more proportionate with the surrounding abdomen and pubic region.
The procedure is tailored to the individual’s anatomy and goals and is often performed in conjunction with other abdominal procedures.
Why Do People Consider Monsplasty Surgery?
The size and shape of the mons pubis differs between individuals. Although the reasons individuals consider Monsplasty varies, people may consider surgery for one or more of the following reasons:
- A persistent fullness of the mons pubis despite lifestyle changes.
- Discomfort with clothing such as swimwear or fitted garments.
- Discomfort during physical activity.
- Concerns about changes to the mons area after weight fluctuations, ageing, or previous surgery.
- A desire for the mons pubis to be more proportionate to surrounding body areas.
It is important to note that motivations vary from person to person. Dr Kode assesses each patient individually to determine whether surgery is an appropriate option.
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Monsplasty Surgery?
There are several considerations when determining suitability for surgery. Monsplasty may be considered for individuals who:
- Are in good general health, with no underlying health problems that could affect surgery or its results.
- Have excess fat, skin, or tissue in the mons pubis.
- Have a stable body weight.
- Have realistic expectations about surgical outcomes.
- Understand the risks and complications of the procedure.
- Are non-smokers or are willing to stop smoking at least three months before surgery.
During consultation, Dr Kode reviews your medical history and examines the mons pubis, including the underlying fat and bone structure to determine whether this procedure is suitable for you.
Types and Variations of Monsplasty Surgery
The technique Dr Kode employes will depend on the amount of fat, skin, and tissue, options include:
- Liposuction only: For patients with excess fat and suitable skin tone/quality, Liposuction can help reduce fullness in the mons pubis. This technique involves a small incision in the suprapubic area (the lower abdomen located just above the pubic bone). As it is not as invasive than other techniques does not require as much recovery time.
- Excision and lift: For patients with significant tissue and/or skin excess, Dr Kode may perform a surgical removal and lift of the mons pubis. Incisions are usually placed where the mons pubis meets the lower abdomen to reduce scar visibility. Closure is performed in layers with sutures beneath the skin.
- Monsplasty with Abdominoplasty: When patients undergo an Abdominoplasty, Monsplasty may be performed at the same time for a balanced approach to the abdominal and pubic regions.
Monsplasty Before & After Photos
Photos are not available online due to the sensitive area involved. Some examples may be available for viewing during your consultation with Dr Kode.
Any images shown on Dr Kode’s website or during a consultation are provided with written patient consent. Before and After images are for informational purposes only. Outcomes vary between individuals depending on age, skin quality, medical history, and surgical technique. Photographs are not a prediction of your personal outcome. A consultation is required to understand whether Monsplasty is suitable for you.
Monsplasty – What’s Involved in the Procedure?
- Anaesthesia: Dr Kode typically performs the procedure while patients are under general anaesthetic. In some cases, usually liposuction-only procedures the procedure can be performed will the patient is under local anaesthetic, although Dr Kode does not generally recommend this.
- Surgery time: Liposuction only procedures take around 30 minutes. However, surgery involving excision of tissue and skin may take up to one hour. If the procedure is being performed in conjunction with an Abdominoplasty or other surgery the time will be longer.
- Incisions: Incisions are usually made in the crease between the mons and lower abdomen.
- Removal of excess skin and/or tissue: Dr Kode will remove the excess fat through liposuction, direct excision, or both. He will then remove any excess skin (if required).
- Closure: Closure is typically performed with dissolvable sutures beneath the skin.
Recovery After Monsplasty Surgery
Immediate Postoperative Period
When Monsplasty is performed on its own, patients are generally able to return home the same day. However, if the procedure is performed in conjunction with an Abdominoplasty or other procedure, an overnight or two-night stay may be recommended.
Swelling, bruising and some discomfort is to be expected during the early recovery period and will dissipate over time. Prescribed or over the counter pain medication and Ice packs can help manage discomfort in the first few days. Patients are usually advised to rest in a flat position during this stage.
Wound Care and Activity Restrictions
During the first few days after surgery, rest is advised while incorporating light walking to support circulation.
Supportive underwear may be recommended to assist with swelling and provide comfort. However, Dr Kode does not recommend the use of compression garments following this procedure.
Individuals with desk-based roles may be able to return to work within approximately one week, although this can vary depending on the specifics of the procedure and individual recovery.
Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and exercise are usually restricted for 3–6 weeks, with the timeline tailored to each person’s healing progress and Dr Kode’s guidance.
Long-Term Healing and Results
Although initial changes can often be seen once the early recovery period has passed, it may take 6 to 12 months for the final outcome of the surgery to become fully apparent.
Scars will typically continue to settle and mature over a period of 12–24 months.
Every individual heals at their own pace. Patients are advised to follow the postoperative instructions provided by Dr Kode and his team, attend follow-up appointments, and seek further advice if they have any concerns during recovery.
Risks and Complications of Monsplasty
All surgical procedures carry potential risks. It is important to understand these before deciding to proceed. Possible risks associated with Monsplasty may include:
- Changes in skin sensation: Temporary or, in some cases, longer-lasting changes to feeling in the treated area may occur.
- Poor scarring: All surgery will result in scars. While scars typically fade and soften over time, some patients may develop raised, red or keloid scarring.
- Infection: As with any surgery, there is a possibility of infection, which may require treatment.
- Anaesthetic risks: Risks associated with anaesthesia including breathing difficulties, Nausea, allergic reaction and more.
- Delayed wound healing or asymmetry: In some cases, healing may take longer than expected, or the outcome may appear uneven.
- Revision surgery: Further procedures may be required if complications occur or if the desired outcome is not achieved.
During your consultation, Dr Kode will discuss the risks that may be more relevant to your individual circumstances. This discussion is part of the informed consent process and provides an opportunity to ask questions before deciding whether to proceed.
