Recovery from Chin Liposuction: What to Expect

Chin Liposuction (or more accurately, neck liposuction) is a surgical procedure that can alter the appearance of the lower face and neck by removing excess fat from under the chin and along the jawline and neck. While there tends to be a lot of focus on the potential results, understanding the recovery process is just as important.

This blog offers a detailed look at what to expect after surgery, how to support your healing, and answers to frequently asked questions about the journey ahead.

It’s important to note that this information is general and that individual healing will vary. Dr Kode and his team will monitor your recovery and give you information specifically tailored to you.

The First 24 to 48 Hours: Immediate Post-Surgical Period

In the initial days following Chin Liposuction, patients can expect to feel:

  • Swelling and mild bruising around the chin, jawline and neck
  • A feeling of tightness or numbness
  • Discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed or recommended pain relief.
  • Keeping elevated to a semi-sitting position and using ice in a damp cloth, is very effective at reducing swelling, bruising, and inflammation

Dr Kode does not recommend the use of a compression garment to wear after surgery.

In other areas of the body, support garments are very useful, but not in the neck. They tend to leave creases in the skin which are very difficult to treat.

Week 1: Rest, Monitoring, and Light Movement

By the end of the first week:

  • Bruising may begin to fade
  • Swelling will still be present, but will begin to gradually reduce
  • You’ll be told to gradually introduces light walks and movements to support circulation

You are advised to avoid strenuous activities, bending forward, or sleeping flat during this period. Keeping your head elevated (including during sleep) can help reduce swelling.

Weeks 2–3: Noticeable Changes Start

During this time:

  • Visible swelling continues to settle
  • You may return to light work and non-strenuous activities
  • Some residual fluid retention and swelling is normal. The final result is visible at 6 months or more

It’s important to continue following your surgeon’s aftercare advice, including, avoiding alcohol and smoking, and maintaining hydration and a nutritious diet.

Weeks 4–6: Return to Routine and Visible Contour Development

Most patients notice increased definition in the chin and jawline by the one-month mark, though this varies depending on individual healing responses and how much work was required to remove the fat. Around this stage:

  • You may resume light exercise (with clearance)
  • Compression garments may no longer be required
  • Any lingering numbness or firmness will continue to subside

Even though you’re likely feeling close to healed, final outcomes can take 6 months or more to fully settle.

Long-Term Healing and Scar Maturation

Chin Liposuction incisions are small and are often placed in discreet locations such as under the chin or behind the ears. While visible scarring is low, the appearance of scars depends on several factors including skin type, adherence to aftercare, and overall healing response.

To support long-term healing:

  • Protect the area from sun exposure
  • Follow any scar care strategies provided by Dr Gary Kode
  • Attend your scheduled follow-up appointments

Supporting Your Recovery: Tips and Considerations

To promote healing and comfort during recovery:

  • Keep elevated and do not lie flat
  • Use ice in a damp cloth
  • Stay well-hydrated and eat nutrient-rich foods
  • Avoid activities that raise blood pressure or put strain on the neck
  • Follow Dr Kodes timeline before resuming exercise
  • Do not wear a compression garment.
  • Report any concerns such as increasing swelling, redness, or pain

When Will I See the Final Result?

Although you may start to notice changes in your profile within the first few weeks, it can take six months or more for swelling to fully subside and the area to settle into its new shape. Patience during this time is key.
